Itinerary

North and South Dakota - two states full of rugged beauty and iconic locations. This tour captures many of the highlights these northern states have to offer, from national parks to historic sites, and everything in between.

Day 1 // Council Bluffs, IA

On our first day we head northward toward the Dakotas. Through the plains of Oklahoma and Kansas our first night is along the Missouri river in Council Bluffs, IA.

Day 2 // Sioux Falls, SD

Today we will check out the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center of Sioux City and its collection of exhibits on that famous expedition. From there, Sioux Falls awaits our visit with a waterfall, sculpture art, and a delicious dinner for us to enjoy.

Day 3 // Rapid City, SD

This morning we have the opportunity to visit the world's only Corn Palace! First established in 1892, this amazing building is an event center with corn murals throughout, both inside and out. We then head west, and after an included lunch, we will take a scenic drive through Badlands National Park. There is rugged beauty in the windswept peaks and valleys of this park. You may feel like you are traveling back in time as the day ends at the much lauded Wall Drug Store. You can still get a free cup of water – but the ice cream is pretty good too!

Day 4 // Keystone, SD

Our drive this morning takes us through Custer State Park, known for its free-range bison herd. After lunch in the park, we journey on to Crazy Horse Memorial. Here we will have the unique experience of seeing this massive carving from the base of the mountain before checking out the exhibits at the visitor center. It is just a short drive to the rough and tumble western town of Keystone. Tonight we visit Mt Rushmore to watch their evening lighting ceremony and presentation, a truly unique experience.

Day 5 // Medora, ND

We will drive through two famous towns in South Dakota today. Sturgis, known for holding a large annual motorcycle rally, is worth a quick look before we stop in Deadwood for lunch. Founded during one of the great gold rushes in 1800's, Deadwood's notorious inhabitants of outlaws and gunslingers gave it a reputation that lives on well over a hundred years later. This afternoon we arrive in North Dakota.

Day 6 // Medora, ND

We will start our day with a visit to the the Chateau de Mores. This grand structure was built by the Marquis de Mores in 1883 as a summer home and hunting lodge. Theodore Roosevelt National Park was named after the man that started the National Park System. “Teddy” lived in the area and was an avid conservationist, and also our 26th president! Here you can see the Maltese Cross Cabin in which he lived, and be on the lookout for herds of bison, elk, and even wild horses. After some free time this afternoon, we have dinner at the Pitchfork Fondue, followed by the Medora Musical variety show in an outdoor amphitheater.

Day 7 // Bismarck, ND

The adventure continues as we traverse the State toward the city of Bismarck. We will take time to stop at the unique art deco style of the North Dakota State Capitol, the tallest building in the whole state! Tonight we will board the Lewis and Clark Riverboat. Sit back and enjoy the ride on our relaxing dinner cruise along the Missouri River.

Day 8 // Sioux City, IA

We turn south today, and a rest stop at Frontier Village will give you something to ponder on our drive. This unique village contains original buildings, antiques, and artifacts from all over North Dakota. Tonight we will cross back into Iowa for our last night's stay together.

Day 9 // Home

As we journey home, we can take time to reflect on the great memories, and new friends that we have made on this great tour to the Dakota Territory.
