Day 1 // St. Louis, MO
You'll be enchanted by the beauty and history of West Virginia on this charming wilderness adventure. Learn about the fascinating history of the area, take in the scenery from a relaxing train ride aboard a vintage train, and more!
Day 2 // Louisville, KY
We'll start out the day at the Cathedral Basilica of St Louis – this beautiful building is the result of a harmonious blend of dozens of architects' and artisans' designs. Our big adventure today is the historic multi-level riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River. Enjoy the grand Gateway Arch of St Louis from a different perspective on a one-hour riverboat tour.
Day 3 // Charleston, WV
We'll begin our morning with a tour of the Keeneland Racing Track in Lexington. Observe the work and care that go in to getting the horses ready as they prepare for the next race. Since 1978, the Kentucky Horse Park has been a working horse farm and show venue. With public barns, two museums, several presentations, and countless horses to admire, there will be plenty to keep us busy for a few hours today.
Day 4 // Lewisburg, WV
Get ready for adventure with two exciting and unique subterranean experiences! Visit the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine where you'll ride through a real coal mine guided by a veteran miner and have the chance to explore the recreated coal camp for a sneak peek into what life was like. Later see the Lost World Caverns, a wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites 120 feet below the surface. A delicious dinner tonight will finish off our day of discovery.
Day 5 // Elkins, WV
Hidden beneath a luxurious resort and carved deep into the mountainside is a once top secret U.S. government relocation facility. Tour the Greenbrier Bunker to see the precautions taken to secure government officials in case of an attack during the Cold War. Lunch is included at the Greenbrier. Named for Andrew Carnegie, the philanthropic steel tycoon, Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg is one of only four "Carnegie Halls" still in operation worldwide. This is our opportunity to discover the beautifully-restored building's history, art gallery, and architecture. The Gandy Dancer Theatre, known for its musical and comedy shows, is sure to provide exciting live entertainment tonight.
Day 6 // Bridgeport, WV
Explore the Mountain State aboard a vintage train on the New Tygert Flyer. This wilderness excursion features a beautiful diesel-powered train and miles of unspoiled mountain views. Enjoy lunch while relaxing aboard the locomotive as it chugs along towards our culminating destination, the 18' High Falls of Cheat waterfall.
Day 7 // Dayton OH
Travel by sternwheeler riverboat to reach Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, home to a Palladian mansion and a museum of regional history. Take a horse-drawn wagon ride and learn a little more on the history of the island and the fascinating story of the people that lived there.
Day 8 // St Louis, MO
Soak in the scenery of the changing countryside as we continue our journey. After a lunch stop, we will visit the small town of Elsah, IL. An entire block of this small town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places! A local guide will show us around and tell us about the roots of this village and how it came to be.
Day 9 // Home
Today we journey home, with a little more knowledge of America's history in our heads, and more memorable moments in our hearts.
