Itinerary

Ride the rails, arriving at one of the natural wonders of the world on an excursion that is rich with American Southwestern history and culture, and includes breathtaking views of the Sonoran Desert around every turn!

Day 1 // Amarillo, TX

We point west, leaving the Midwest behind. Tonight we settle in for the night in Amarillo, Texas.

Day 2 // Santa Fe, NM

A city tour introduces us to Santa Fe, the oldest capital in the U.S. and nicknamed “The City Different” for its rich blend of cultures. We tour the famous Loretto Chapel, home to a “miraculous” spiral staircase built with no visible means of support. This evening, free time awaits at the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

Day 3 // Williams, AZ

We cross into Arizona, stopping in Winslow for a photo at the Standin’ on the Corner Park. Dinner’s included tonight as we settle in for the start of our Grand Canyon adventure.

Day 4 // Grand Canyon, AZ

We board the Grand Canyon Railway for a one-way ride into Grand Canyon Village, lunch included. As evening falls, a Sunset Pink Jeep Tour puts us right at the rim. Dinner and our hotel await on the canyon’s south rim.

Day 5 // Sedona, AZ

Desert View Drive delivers overlook after overlook of the canyon. At the Cameron Trading Post, lunch comes with a browse through handmade pottery, baskets, and kachina dolls from local artists. Dinner closes out the day.

Day 6 // Tucson, AZ

We ride the restored Verde Canyon Railroad — 4 hours, 20 miles, 110 years of history — through open-air viewing cars with a light lunch on board.

Day 7 // Tucson, AZ

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum brings the desert to life with gardens, aquariums, and animal exhibits. In the afternoon, the Pima Air & Space Museum spreads 80 acres of aircraft and Space Race artifacts across its hangars. Dinner tonight goes Old West.

Day 8 // Las Cruces, NM

Tombstone’s two-story Victorian courthouse, now a museum, lays out the town’s mining-boom history. Then it’s front-row seats for a reenactment of the 1881 O.K. Corral shootout before lunch and the road ahead.

Day 9 // Lubbock, TX

Time to go underground. Carlsbad Caverns National Park holds “the Big Room” — the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America — packed with limestone formations that feel otherworldly.

Day 10 // Home

Enchanted by the beautiful scenery in the sunny Southwest, we return home rejuvenated by our canyonland escape.
