Itinerary
Day 1 // St. Louis, MO
Our Great Lakes journey begins as we travel across the Show Me State to St. Louis for the night.
Day 2 // Holland, MI
We continue north as the Midwest prairie gives way to the rolling hills of western Michigan. The long drive ends on the water, with an included dinner cruise on Lake Michigan.
Day 3 // Cadillac, MI
In the lakeshore town of Whitehall, we tour the White River Light Station. Built in 1875, the lighthouse displays Great Lakes maritime artifacts and tells the story of the family who kept the light. This afternoon, hold on tight for a dune ride across the windswept Michigan sands.
Day 4 // Mackinac Island, MI
Lunch is included at Castle Farms, where we explore acres of gardens and Michigan’s largest outdoor model railroad. A short ferry ride carries us to Mackinac Island, where the lack of motor vehicles keeps the island quiet.
Day 5 // Mackinac Island, MI
A carriage tour takes us across the island to Arch Rock, a towering natural limestone arch. Lunch is included at the historic Grand Hotel, and the rest of the day is yours. Perhaps visit Fort Mackinac, rent a bicycle along the harbor, or pick up the island’s famous fudge to take home.
Day 6 // Escanaba, MI
We return to the mainland and visit Whitefish Point Light Station, the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior. It is also home to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, where we learn how closely this region’s history is tied to the water. After lunch we visit Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Its Upper Falls is the second-largest waterfall east of the Mississippi.
Day 7 // Milwaukee, WI
We go behind the scenes at Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, and stop in the Hall of Fame for some Cheesehead history. Lunch at the stadium is included. This afternoon, we visit North Point Lighthouse, built on the bluffs of Lake Michigan more than 130 years ago.
Day 8 // Des Moines, IA
We wouldn't dare leave Wisconsin without first stopping for some of their famous cheese! Alp & Dell Cheese has the largest variety of Wisconsin cheese curds in an array of flavors. With your snacks in tow, we'll cross state lines and arrive in Iowa for the evening.
Day 9 // Home
Picturesque scenery and the sweet scent of lilacs will linger in our memory as we journey home today.
